Cost Drivers
Proposition 2½ was built to give taxpayers a voice - it caps automatic levy increases at 2.5 percent, but the ability to pass overrides is built into the statute, because legislators knew that costs could go up more than 2.5 percent. And that is exactly where Grafton finds itself.
Inflation is driving up the costs of everything - including health insurance, transportation, special education services, public safety/public works/school staff salaries, and materials and fuel needed to run the town.
At the same time, neither state funding nor the limits of Proposition 2½ have kept up with inflation. This isn't a spending problem - it's a funding problem.
Voting No Comes With Real Costs
A no vote will require devastating cuts over the next few years — to school programs, public safety, senior services, and municipal amenities — that will change our quality of life in Grafton.
As the caliber of our schools and public services diminishes, the town risks losing key revenue streams. This creates a downward cycle where taxpayers face higher costs for a reduced level of municipal services.
Once this cycle starts, it’s difficult to break.
